From nippy, pushy, nervous and uncooperative
→ to focused, calm and responsive.
From feeling frustrated and overwhelmed
→ to knowing how you can support your horse and make steady progress.
I don’t believe in “patching symptoms.”
Because symptoms change.
Foundations hold.
Pulling to the grass, pushing into your space, rushing, planting feet, nipping—these are not separate problems. They’re often different expressions of the same gap: unclear communication, unclear boundaries, or missing awareness.
So we don’t chase behavior.
We build the base layer:
Clear requests
Good timing
Consistent boundaries
Awareness and release, step by step.
The result: relaxed horse, confident human.

If this is you, you're in the right place.
You want to start classical work in hand, but you’re not sure what needs to come first.
Groundwork feels inconsistent: some days it works, some days it doesn’t.
Your horse pushes into your space—or pulls to the grass.
You’re dealing with nipping, tension, or “checking out.”
You’re protecting the relationship… and you’re afraid that “training” will damage it.
You don’t need to be stricter.
And your horse doesn’t need to be “fixed.”
What you need is a clearer foundation—so both of you can relax.
This isn’t about controlling your horse.
It’s about building understanding.
The Three Foundations That Make Groundwork Feel Easy
This is how you stop managing problems—and start building understanding.
TOOL HANDLING &
SAFETY

Calm hands create calm horses.
You’ll learn simple, ethical tool handling—rope, halter, whip/flag—so your aids become clear instead of noisy.
SPACE & COMMUNICATION

The space between you is the conversation.
We build boundaries, focus, and respectful distance—without force—so your horse can understand and relax.
PATTERNS & PROGRESSION

Reliability comes from repeatable steps.
You’ll follow a progression of leading exercises, from simple to advanced, that create lasting habits.
This is for you if...
You want a kind, structured plan instead of “try this exercise.”
You care about the relationship and still want clear boundaries.
You want groundwork to feel calm, consistent, and understandable.
You’re starting from zero—or rebuilding basics with a young horse or a horse you can't seem to understand.
You want foundations that lead toward the Art of Riding.
This isn't for you if...
You want a quick fix to “make the behavior stop.”
You want force-based methods or “show the horse who’s boss.”
You don’t want to practice simple steps until they become a habit.
If leading isn't clear, nothing is.
In three months, you'll feel it...
More calm.
More agreement.
More lightness.
You’ll have a system you can repeat.
Your horse will understand what you mean.
And that’s when it gets lighter—
in the arena, at the gate, and on a walk.

Module 1 — Orientation: How to use the course and platform, study tips
You're not a natural when it comes to using online courses? No worries, I've got you covered. Module 1 is the onboarding module in which you find all the information needed to navigate the course platform, to get ready for the course and how to make the most out of it!

Module 2 — Tools & Tool Handling: Rope, halter, whip/flag—ethical, confident handling.
In module 2, you'll learn all about the equipment we use for leading training. Focusing on exercises is hard when you feel awkward handling a rope and whip! This module explains how to fit a halter, and how to handle rope, whip, and flag. We'll also talk about body language, the ethics of using equipment, how to approach your horse to be haltered, how to halter with consent, and much more!

Module 3 — The Space Between Us: Boundaries, focus, distance, and release—without force.
Becoming mindful of the space between us makes training on the ground so much easier. In Module 3, we'll talk about friends, followers and leaders, about personal space and how to respect space or ask for space. I'll invite you to learn about your horse's rules and your own rules, the benefits of breaks, and how to improve focus in the training.

Module 4 — Leading Training: Walk–halt–turning–rhythm: the step-by-step exercises.
Module 4 breaks down leading training into easy, achievable steps. We cover simple exercises such as how to walk, stop, turn, go slower and faster, back up, and change direction. In the more advanced leading exercises, we'll speak about rhythm, leading from the outside, leading arena patterns, leading in trot, in unfamiliar places, and how to go for walks. In addition, you'll get an exercise sequence to test your skills.

Module 5 — Leading with distance: Long-line leading, refining communication, and real-life reliability
The leading exercises in module 4 are going well? Great, let's refine the communication with your horse even more! In module 5, you'll learn all about leading with distance. We'll speak about how to get and keep your horse at a distance and how to do the same exercises as in module 4, but now on a longer line. We will also cover shoulder yields and leading with distance in trot, leading over obstacles, and I will tell you how this work can be used for trailer loading. Again, you will get a sequence to test your skills.

Module 6 — Groundwork position: Your first steps toward the academic groundwork position.
As a bonus, I'll introduce you to the academic groundwork position: walking backwards in front of the horse. I will tell you about why this position is so beneficial, and how to start using it. By the end of this module, you'll be ready to learn academic groundwork with your horse.

Module 7 — Troubleshooting: Nipping, rushing, stopping, distraction, “velcro,” pushiness.
Encountering difficulties? Module 7 covers many challenges and how to solve them, such as what to do with a nippy horse, how to deal with a horse that doesn't want to start moving or keeps stopping, how to stop a speedy horse, what to do with a horse that glues to you and you can't get distance between you, how to deal with a pushy horse or a very distracted horse, and much more. This module will grow with you, and you're welcome to ask your questions!

Module 8 — Summary & What’s Next: Make it a habit and know what to do next.
Congratulations, you completed the course! You now have a solid foundation on the ground and are ready for the next adventures. In module 8, we will do a course summary. I will explain about lesson options, and I will give you a glimpse of the academic groundwork, where horse and human dance together in the side movements and in which we can introduce the most advanced exercises to the horse.
What my students say:
Not sure if this will work for you and your horse? Read about the transformations course students experienced with their horses:
After more than 30 years of working with horses, I didn’t expect to learn anything truly new about leading. But I was completely mistaken! Through Bettina’s videos, insightful demonstrations, and thoughtful coaching, Rio and I have developed a much deeper connection with even more subtle communication. The positive changes we’ve made in such a short time are remarkable, and I’m super excited to see where this journey takes us next!
Bettina’s “Leading Training” videos have been so beneficial in transforming my totally green, nippy, pushy little pony, Treacle, whom I can now take for pleasurable walks away from the yard and from the rest of the herd. I am more competent in both my own body language and its impact on Treacle and in observing her needs and recognising when something is not clear for her. Treacle can now focus and, although still cheeky sometimes, is a joy to engage with. We look forward to slowly, but steadily progressing together.
"Leading training with Bettina has been a true turning point for me and my young horse. He came to me with a history of inconsistent training, and as a first-time horse owner, maintaining steady progress sometimes felt uncertain. Bettina’s lessons offer insightful, detailed explanations and achievable examples. Leading training has helped us build the clarity and mutual understanding we needed to move forward in our education. I am excited to see where this journey of growth and trust takes us. Highly recommend!"
Bettina’s leading training videos have been a wonderful resource for building a connection with my young unstarted Welsh D mare. We now have a clear foundation of communication and I can already see my ‘velcro pony’ growing in confidence and expression. I’ve been around horses my whole life and this course has helped strengthen my understanding of the essential foundations of healthy horse-human relationships.

NICE TO MEET YOU
Hi, I'm Bettina
I’m a licensed Bent Branderup Trainer and I teach the Academic Art of Riding—ethical dressage that starts with the relationship and builds step by step. I’m known for making groundwork feel clear and doable—without force, pressure, or quick fixes.
I created From Zero to Hero because I’ve seen it again and again: when the groundwork foundation isn’t clear, everything feels harder than it needs to—especially leading. Years ago, I wanted the “fancy work”, too. But the real turning point was learning to build the basics in a way my horse could truly understand.
This course gives you the system I teach in my work: clarity, kindness, and repeatable steps that create real reliability.
It’s trust.
It’s communication.
It’s the quiet agreement that makes everything else possible.
Your journey starts here
Build the system once.
Then let it support you—at the gate, in the arena, and on a walk.
Start at zero.
Follow the steps.
Keep the relationship.
